Wow! When Did it Last Snow in Houston, Texas?
79December 4, 2009 will go down in the record books as the earliest snowfall in Houston, Texas history. It was a wow moment because we rarely see snow at all down here.
According to a MSNBC source, Houston has only experienced snow falling thirty-three times since the year 1895 so one must realize with a statistic like that just how rare an occasion it is to see snow.
To top it off, it has never previously snowed two years in a row.
Thus...all kinds of records have been broken this year.
In the Houston Chronicle newspaper, the front page last year featured a snowman on the beaches in Galveston. That was quite a sight.
Snowman in Houston, Texas!
Snowman in Houston
The snowman shown here was in our subdivision about five houses away from where we live.
I realize that this might not be impressive to those of you who live up north and can build your gigantic snowmen each year dressed with colorful woolen neck scarves and other adornments, but hey!...whoever built this snowman probably does not even own a woolen neck scarf.
Also one has to act fast down here and scrape together every available bit of snow to even construct a snowman.
Notice the grass devoid of most of the snow?
Mr. Snowman has most of it along with the fallen leaves, twigs and anything else that happened to be laying on the ground when he was constructed.
In our eyes...Mr. Snowman is a real beauty!

Entertainment...
We happened to be hosting a lunch today in our home for a recent widow friend of ours and her son. A few flakes were falling as our company arrived but before long the snow started falling in earnest.
The flakes were so large and coming down so fast that as we were sitting in our living room and later the kitchen eating area, we could hardly keep our eyes from the entertaining show outside our windows.
"Oohs" and "aahs" relating to the rare spectacle that was unfolding before us brought smiles to many faces.
It took a while for any accumulation of snow to take place due to the warmth of the ground and the above freezing weather. But the rapidity of the heavy large flaked snowfall finally started to blanket the ground, trees and rooftops.
A winter wonderland was ours to enjoy for a rare moment in time.
Snow in Houston, Texas!
I remember the second or third year after my husband and I were married, there was a similar snowfall and we handily built a spectacular snowman in the apartment complex where we were living at the time.
At that time in the early 1970's as well as today, the city goes into play mode except for the people responsible for keeping the roadways safe and other key personnel whose jobs are pertinent for keeping the populace safe.
Schools were let out early.
Businesses let many of their workers out early.
Today was no exception.
Snow accumulations were reported in the one to four inch range depending upon where one lives in and around Houston today.
Most other years if it snows at all , it is generally a fraction of an inch so this type of snowfall which we enjoyed today was an amazing sight enjoyed by almost everyone.
The only snow generally seen around here is man-made and for special occasions only.
Subdivisions like the one in which we live hire the snow machine operators to come once during the winter so that children who may never have seen snow get to frolic in it for a brief time. Those moments are savored from year to year.
Anyone reading this must know the excitement that this real and heavy snowfall generated today for children and adults alike.
The news channels on television this evening were filled with snow photos sent in from viewers.
One photo showed two children with upraised faces, their mouths open and tongues catching the large snowflakes. We actually saw a teenager walking outside our home doing the very same thing. Her face was beaming.
Driving? Forget it!
People are actually being advised to stay home if at all possible once they get off from work.
The roads will ice up tonight from the moisture and accidents were already occurring and being reported on the 6 PM newscasts tonight.
No one knows how to drive in snow down here...and for sure...not ice!
Best to take the advice and just enjoy the weather anomaly and enjoy this rare occasion. Tomorrow is another day to get back into the groove...
Our childhood photos
Childhood memories...
After our company departed to go back home, we continued to watch the snow fall although it was starting to diminish in intensity. The large heavy flakes had ceased falling and a light dusting was now taking its place.
Childhood memories of the times when my mother and I were growing up in Wisconsin were discussed. She discussed some of her memories and I reviewed some of mine.
Snow forts...
I was remembering playing with my two younger brothers. We would build a snow fort and then draw straws as to which one of us got to stay inside the fort and which ones would be outside the fort for our snowball fights.
There were advantages both ways.
Outside the fort there was an endless amount of snow in which to construct our snowballs while it was more limited inside the fort. But inside the fort, one had more protection against the airborne snowballs once launched.
Each of us got our fair share of hits with the snowballs and much laughter was replayed in my mind today of those episodes.
Our parents would also join in playing with us occasionally. Those snowball fights were really good ones! :-)
Building snowmen...
With my parent's help, the snowmen would get ever so much larger than the ones that we could create on our own. My Dad would have to lift the second part of the body onto the first giant ball and then hoist the head on top. After dressing the snowman, we got to enjoy him for a long time as the Wisconsin winters were very friendly to keeping snowmen intact for long periods of time.
The clothing we wore...
Clothing was different back then and to stay warm we were bundled up with layers of socks, pants, sweaters, jackets, scarves, hats, mittens and boots. Now with the new micro-fibers which are lightweight and yet warm which also repel moisture...people no longer look like the Michelin Tire Man when dressed for the outdoors like we resembled back in those days.
Other outdoor activities included sledding, tobogganing and ice skating.
My Dad would shovel a great big circle on the frozen lake where my grandmother lived and we would all go ice skating several times in the Winter. My Dad was a great skater! He could ice skate backwards as easily as forwards which always impressed me.
Thus this snowfall in Houston, Texas was not only beautiful to see today but it brought back many happy memories for those of us who had grown up in northern climes where snow was expected each winter. And for others, the wow factor alone made this a very special and memorable day.

We just had snow over the weekend in New England with parts of Connecticut getting 20" - but we got a more modest 6". Still it was the wet snow kind due to time of year and this is the best type to make a snowman. I enjoyed reading your hub and no I don't think anybody is pathetic for getting excited over a few inches in one of warmer states.
The last time I saw snow in Houston area was a few years back in the Woodlands area. I was in a department store shopping, people were taking pictures of the falling snow with cellphones.
It is snowing here in Western NY as I read this - but we're used to snow up here in the great frozen north! I grew up in Southern California and it was an extreme rarity to see snow (once, when I was nine, snow fell in Ontario, California - it melted on contact with the ground). It is so fun to watch the kids and the dog on the first day of snowfall, but it certainly gets old by April! It looks like you guys enjoyed your snow and had a nice, cozy day indoors!
Howdy Peggy -
I am always awed by your fascinating articles and the photos that you present along with the texts. Thank you.
What was amazing about the weather in Houston, Texas, during the last several weeks is that the temperatures have gone from the ridiculous to the sub-zero (feels like) - 100+ degrees for several months to the high 40's seemingly overnight.
I sense that Houston is in for a mighty cold winter this time around...
Gus :-)))
It's fun seeing snow outside. It's quiet unfortunate as i have never witnessed one.
Peggy - good memories - snow doesn't fall very often in Houston but when it does it brings out pure excitement and enjoy for the little ones. Doesn't stand for long but it has fallen a few times!
Nice family photos. I recall playing in the snow once as a child in North Florida. The snow melts very quickly in the Sunshine State. It would surely be nice to revisit those days of yester years. Wonderful momeries...thanks for the photos!
Lovely hub. I’m just amazed at how much your part of Texas looks like a typical British suburb, except we get a bit more of the white stuff.
It looks like spring there!!! The snow might not be so bad if it just melted the next day!!! We are buried here, which is good for Christmas but we won't see grass again until March or April. It is 0 here right now! And that was the warm up. :-(
I didn't know the name of iced rain is hail, thank for sharing. Hails in my country although rarely happen, but sometimes contain big ice so that they can break wind shield of cars.
I loved your Hub, Peg. I love the snow. Tobogganing was my favorite thing as a boy in Michigan; and sledding. Thanks for memories. We don't get snow in Orlando. Only the occasional citrus killing frost.
Without central heating I can remember waking up to frost patterns on the inside of the windows in the winter here in the UK whan I was a child. I liked this hub.
Wow, nice hub there, you fellow Texan you!
Good lead-in to your memories of snowball fights and such.
My first white Christmas was on Dec. 25, 2004, when I was visiting my mom in South Central Texas (her house is about the halfway point between San Antonio and Corpus). She got 8" of snow that day! I seem to recall my brother and his wife driving home from Houston that day, and their report that Houston got little to no snow. I have pictures of my mom's blooming rose bushes with snow on them.
Nice picture of that cute Skippy with the impatiens and the pretty green ground cover!
you are such a beautiful child when you were very young!
i have not experienced snow and i bet i will not like it. i am weak when it comes to coldness. very weak actually.
They were calling for 40 cm, but I think it ended up being 20 cm (so, let me see, I think 1 in. = 2.2cm...)
How could you possibly live with snow? LOL
The snowman was my favorite part. :0)
It seems to be over now. In any case it is very early -- in St. John's we sometimes even have green Christmases, in fact.
(Were the winds not 100 km/h rather than 100 mph? I didn't check -- still though...)
I want a white Christmas here in DC ): lucky Texas
Wow - excellent Hub! That really reminded me of the days gone by as a former Jersey Girl!
Snow is a great reminder to slow down and appreciate. I've seen plenty of it in my time, but not here in Qatar. Even rain is a rarity here!
Wow, it's an amazing thing. The rare event of snow falling in Houston is maybe like iced rains which also sotimes surprisingly fall in my country.
No Peggy, it was the small flakes. It accumulated a bit on rooftops and grassy areas...enough to make it look white all over! But it didn't stick on the roads :( We are expected to get a wet winter, did you hear that earlier in the year? Thats what they are saying for Texas, YAY!

We are bracing for a pretty big snowstorm here tonight and tomorrow-- predicted to be between 8- 12 inches. We are at an elevation of 3200 ft which is usually the lower edge of the snowline. We get a little, or sometimes a couple of feet, but it does not last very long. This is early snow for us. It is usually more likely to arrive in January and February.
We got our first snow last year on Christmas Day-- which was also early, but perfect because the 'flatlander' kids and grandkids were visiting for the holidays.
I grew up in coastal Southern California where there is one season all year-- but we always visited the snow in the winter, since it was only a couple of hours to the mountains.
Enjoyed your experiences.
It snowed here in Arlington last Wednesday! I was like, what is this white cold stuff falling from the sky?! LOL!
Great hub!
Hi Peggy, I just moved from Pa back to my home in Florida, so there will be no snow for me. But I enjoyed your hub.
Well weren't you the cutest thing? I have been down south when it snows and it's no fun for me. We know how to handle it up here. I was in El Paso a number of years ago when it snowed there, they went nuts. LOL Cool hub Peggy.
This is a great look at our snow day! Everyone was in a state of excitement. I would love to share links. I am putting up your link right now! Great hub and great day!
Nice hub, Peggy.
Hi Peggy,
What a great day 4th December was for you all in Houston, We don't get snow in this part of Australia where we live. However, I have been to Thredbo in Australia, wheeeeeee, I fell out of a toboggan, and hit my head on a rock. I loved the snow fields. What a treat the snowfall was for you all there such a thrill there for you. This day will go down in history as one of the best, and you were there to witness it. How fantastic it must have been to see SNOW SNOW SNOW
I can't say that I know what it like to snow in your own city, but I have been to the snowfields in Thredbo, which is one of our biggest snowfall areas in the lower part of New South Wales. That was a great place to go but unfortunately my memories are a bit fuzzy, because I fell out of a tobboggan, not so good. I hit my head and the rest is fuzzy because I got a concussion. I doubt that I will get another chance. I am so disappointed about that but I have some memories of the snow there and how it looked. I will treasure those. Hope it happens again for you Pegg. BB
What a coincidence that you wrote this one, Peggy! We just got our first snowfall of the year and in total, received only an inch. Most of the snow melted before it hit the ground, but it was magical nevertheless. During this time of year, sledding was best. Snowball fights were only fun when you came out barely "hit" which in my case was never. Making snow men as also a treat, but my favorite out of all things is coming outside as the snow is accumulating, where there are barely any cars moving and everything is untouched because everyone's still sleeping. I can actually "hear" the snowflakes falling (only when it is absolute silent. Sounds far-fetched right? Yes, but it's true!
Great memories for a great hub, Peggy. I reminisced with you the entire time while reading your narrative. Thank you.
Let it SNOW...Houston Style...Yeehaa! That was a good thick snow flurry all day....starting about 8am...where I work....they let everyone go early due to the driving conditions. My yard didn't get too much on it cause of the trees catching it all...but the neighbors around me were able to make some normal sized snowmen in their yards. And my roof is still white on the day after! Maybe that was only the first round...for the Winter, Peggy W...Who knows? Great Hub on a Houston Snow Day.
We're getting a snow storm tomorrow... but then I live in Newfoundland... :-(
Such a lovely hub! oh, i love snow....last year, they had record snowfall in london, so much so that all the schools, buses and even the underground trains were shut down...and though it was all quite inconvenient, yet, a part of us couldn't stop marveling at the beauty around us! The children were the happiest! anyway, really enjoyed reading this and loved how you put in that bit about your childhood memories too!
Snow in Houston! Who would believe it?
I really enjoyed your article! I grew up in Houston, and I can't imagine 4 inches of snow falling there! We just had some light flurries here in Austin.

My wife has relatives in Leakey, Texas. I have never been there, but I'm told it is warmer than Wisconsin. I had some sort of allergic reaction to something that caused my tongue to swell and I ended up in the hospital overnight and had a ride to Marshfield in an ambulance. By the way we probably have more extensive health facilities here than when you lived here, which includes a extension clinic of the Marshfield clinic.
It was probably fortunate because my wife last week had to have gall bladder surgery and it would have been a problem on the road
LOL -- Better you have the snow than me --- we get more than our share and the longer it takes for first snow fall - the better I LOVE it. Three cheers for a brown (or green) Christmas. I'm crossing my fingers but not holding my breath. LOL

Wisconsin Rapids hasn't got that much snow yet but it won't be long. I remember when I was working at Rock Island, IL we sometimes took courses that were on some sort of closed circuit TV from Fort Lee, VA. We were constantly amused when they got an amount of snow like you did and were sent home because of the weather. I haven't been in Wisconsin long enough, but in Minneapolis it seemed that they didn't close for anything.
We had a trip planned for Texas but not near Houston. It is delayed because of some health problems. Hope to get there maybe in January.
I saw a foot of snow in Dallas in 1960. It was gone by 3:00 PM.
I remember heavy snow at times as a child. Yorkshire used to get very cold. You have beaten us this year as we have had no snow yet. Just one frosty morning.
Lovely childhood photos Peggy.
Thank you for such a lovely hub. I am so glad to read about this in Houston. That brings again the question to my mind - Global Warming. I love snow and we had great fun when we were children. I think that snowman was fantastic.
Hi Peggy,
I grew up in the South-East corner of England, and in my memory it certainly seems as though we has at least a week or two of snow every year right up until the late 80s, and then for the next 15-20 years, almost none at all. Consequently my two children were really, really excited when we had a few days worth earlier this year, and our local schools were closed. I'm sure to any Canadians, Norwegians etc, reading this, the excitement (and chaos!) generated by a couple of inches of snow must sound pathetic, but we must find our pleasures where we can! Lovely snowman, and a fun hub.

Hi beccas90,
I know according to the news that the New England states have been blasted with snow and so early in the season. Lots of power outages. Hopefully this is not a portend of the winter ahead! I remember those first wet snows of the season when we lived in Wisconsin. So pretty and so much fun for children of all ages! It is TRULY an occasion when it happens down here in the south because of its rarity. Thanks for your comment.
