Umpqua River and other Superlative Natural Places in Southwestern Oregon

Vacationing in Oregon
This leg of my mother's, niece's and my vacation journey took us from Roseburg (which is located in the southwestern portion of Oregon) heading west along route 138 which follows the Umpqua River for many scenic miles to numerous scenic areas of splendour.
Superlatives cannot aptly describe the beauty that we were enjoying as we stopped along the way to soak up the ambiance...get our feet wet and more (in the case of my niece)...watch the acrobatic fishing lines being cast from fly fishermen and other objects worth viewing.
Hopefully these pictures taken on that vacation of many years ago...1987 to be exact...will give one some idea of just why Oregon is a paradise for people who love nature.

Splendorous sites abound in Oregon and we had already sampled some of them including the Japanese Gardens in Portland (one of many places of interest in that City of Roses), the Columbia River Gorge and its many waterfalls, Mount Hood and Timberline Lodge.
All of the fore-mentioned is in the northwestern part of the State.
Heading down Interstate Highway 5 to Roseburg, we were about to see the scenery in the southwestern part of Oregon and we were impressed!

Roseburg, Oregon
Anyone loving forested areas as well as picturesque rivers and creeks should make haste to visit this area of the State.
Roseburg has served as a lumbering center but it is also a wool producing part of the State with many sheep grazing the hillsides. Wine-making has also become important as an industry and there are many delicious notable wines that come from this and other parts of Oregon.
Oh...but for hikers and campers and sportsmen...this just might be a slice of Heaven!

Fishing in the Umpqua River
We saw many people fishing and whether they caught anything or not, the sheer beauty of the rippling and in some cases rushing waters of the Umpqua River would have provided a nice respite from their everyday life.
Apparently the emerald waters do contain a significant number of fish, especially steel-head and salmon.
Undoubtedly many a dinner plate is adorned with the days catch.

At one point the water looked so inviting and children seemed to be enjoying themselves scrambling over rocks and playing in the river water.
My niece wanted to join them.
My mother and I tested the waters but it was way too cold for us! So we enjoyed watching the kids play for a while.
My niece made an instant friend of an Oregon girl.
Finally the water even got too cold for my niece and she voluntarily left the water and her new found friend. She changed clothes in the car and we moved on to another spot.
Toketee Falls
Our next venture took us along a beautiful forested area to ultimately see Toketee Falls.
Walking through this heavily forested area with moss covered trees and shafts of sunlight glimmering on leaves and rocks gave us equal pleasure as ultimately viewing the spectacular Toketee Falls.

There are many spots along Route 138 where one can stop and enjoy the views with there being a number of campgrounds and picnic areas along the way.
We happened to stop at Apple Creek and secured a picnic table amidst the most glorious of forested settings where we enjoyed a snack of sour dough bread, cheese and the vegetable drink of V-8. Often we carried picnic supplies with us as we traveled. Not only did it save time, but also money. And who could ask for a more scenic setting?

Biking in this area...
Kayaking on the Umpqua River...
Obviously with only two weeks to spend on vacation in one State, there were limited opportunities to be able to enjoy all that each area had to offer.
Included here are a few videos showing what people can enjoy in this part of the State of Oregon.
For bikers, this seems like a paradise!
Are you a kayaker?
You should love the Umpqua River and its scenery!
How about rafting?
My mother, niece and I have rafted on other trips of ours but did not have the time to participate in that entertaining venture on this one in Oregon.
The Umpqua River obviously provides great fun for those who like to participate in such rafting adventures!

We would move on to enjoy Diamond Lake amidst the Cascade Mountain range and also Crater Lake National Park...the only National Park in all of Oregon.
Those hubs have already been written. I did not want to neglect highlighting this gorgeous region between those better known sites in introducing people to the glories found in Oregon.
The Umpqua River is one of the prettiest rivers that this author has ever viewed! It is just one of the superlative natural sites in southwestern Oregon and worth one's time and effort in exploring.
Does this look like an area that would draw your interest in wanting to visit?

Peggy, Oregon is one of my favorite destinations...I used to travel "up north" many times a year...the terraine is so different from the beautifull, rugged coastal areas to the inland, dry, arid, desert like interior. Shaniko, a ghost town towards Eastern Oregon, is a great place to visit. Love Newport Beach on the coast line and, of course, Eugene and Corvallis; both college towns. The water is so crystal clear in so many of the running streams and rivers...I loved spending time along the Dalles.. and also Willamette...so beautiful. Thank you for another fabulous introduction to another breathtaking part of our country.
It's so beautiful in Oregon and your hub make it like a great vacation heaven.

Everything is so pristine and beautiful. Great Hub.
Because I can't swim I have never done much in the way of water sports, except fishing when I was young. I t makes me think that I should have included such more when writing about Minnesota and Wisconsin.
