Snowmen

This hub is about all things regarding to snowmen, that being snowmen ornaments for Christmas tree decorations and even Frosty the Snowman.

Remember Frosty the Snowman?

Most of us of a certain age were first introduced to Frosty the Snowman in cartoon form as well as that oh-so-familiar song sung by many famous people as well as others over the years.

Every year that I remember some version of Frosty the Snowman is played on television during this time of year, approaching the Christmas season and holidays.

Of course those of us who grew up in snow country made our own snowmen every year.

Getting ready to play outside in the snow...

Growing up in the countryside of Wisconsin we had plenty of snow each winter.

I remember the fun-filled days of our entire family getting bundled up in multiple layers of heavy clothing getting ready to play outside.

Fabrics were entirely different back then.

After putting on pants, socks, and sweaters we put our snow pants and jackets on...pulled on our boots and mittens and covered our heads with hats and wrapped woolen scarves around our necks.

It was quite the process and took some time.

The last thing before getting encased with all this clothing my mother would ask is the question..."Did you go to the bathroom?"

Sometimes kids have to be reminded about the obvious when excited to go and play outside.

The last thing she wanted to do after a few minutes of play was to have to help us out of much of this bulky clothing to take care of necessary things.

I well remember those days!

At recess time in school, it took almost half of the time to get dressed for the outside and also to shed our outer clothing after recess was over.

Clothing has certainly been improved since then. Lightweight fabrics now keep one warm while repelling moisture.

But it was not the case back in the 1950's.

Making Real Snowmen

As already stated, my family which consisted of my mother, father and two younger brothers often played outside in the snow.

Besides making snow forts and having snowball fights...ah...those were fun!...we also made snowmen.

The best snow for making snowmen is when the snow is slightly wet (not powder dry) so that it can be packed and made into a snowball shape.

My Dad first showed us how to pack a bunch of snow into somewhat of a ball shape and then start rolling it.

As it rolled it picked up more snow and grew in circumference getting quite large.

At some point, knowing that the next rounded shape would have to be lifted onto the large ball of the base, another ball would be started.

As many of us as would fit would take turns rolling that ball enlarging it until my Dad told us that he thought it was big enough.

Of course he had to be able to lift it and put it on the base so there was a limiting factor as to just how large that second ball could be made due to weight considerations.

After that second ball was firmly put into place the smaller head size of the snowman would be made.

This was such a fun family project!

A little bit of final sculpting of the snowman would take place and then he would be decorated with sticks for arms, chunks of coal for the eyes, mouth and buttons going down his body and of course a carrot for his nose. A corncob pipe would complete the look.

Finally Mr. Snowman would have a scarf wrapped around his neck and an old hat placed on his head.

We thought that he was beautiful!!!

Christmas Tree Decorations

Whether or not one has grown up in the north where snow is prevalent in the winter or only see pictures and videos of snow because one lives in southern climes, one can use snowmen ornaments for Christmas tree decorations to bring a little bit of the winter spirit into one's home.

Not only are there snowmen ornaments but there are Christmas decorations of all types using snowmen as inspiration.

Just take a look at what is offered online in the way of celebrating this iconic figure!

Snowman books and Snowman records

From the classic Little Golden books that your child would like to receive as a gift to recordings that you or others might wish to collect, the Snowman provides much in the way of entertainment.

There were even comics dedicated to the Frosty the Snowman with him getting in every type of predicament.

Of course the one thing Mr. Snowman could not do...at least for long...was to come inside where it was warm because he would melt.

Hi SanneL,

Clothing has come a long way since the days of our youth (obviously) when we had to wear all of those multiple layers of bulky clothes in order to stay warm. School recess time in the north was mostly spent dressing and undressing with all of that outer clothing with not that much time actually spent outside in the winter. Ah...those were the days!

Making snowmen in those days was fun and of course, they lasted quite some time before melting. Frosty the Snowman song...now you have me humming it! Thanks! :))

This hub brought some fond childhood memories back to me.

Your story gave me the chuckles remembering myself getting bundled up in multiple layers of heavy clothing, only to take it of again, because I had forgotten to go to the bathroom first. Phew!!

Now I know that I'll be humming the Frosty the Snowman song all day long! La la la. . .

I loved this hub.Voted up,up and away!

Hi RTalloni,

Enjoy your real snowmen this year. It is a rare occasion indeed when we get enough snow in Houston to scrape up an entire yard full of the melting stuff to make a small snowman mixed with grass, leaves and twigs. Up where you live and further north...another story entirely!

Sounds like you have fun with your snowman themed kitchen! Your snowman cookie bin would be fun. No sneaking of a cookie without that song being played! Haha! Thanks for your comment.

Cute, cute, cute snowmen. When I can do all my decorating, my kitchen is snowman land. My snowman cookie bin that plays Frosty's tune when the lid is removed is always a great hit with guest. I make a dessert buffet in the kitchen and the laughter rings through the house when someone tries to sneak a cookie. Growing up in Florida I dreamed of what making a snow man would be like. Now that we live in the frigid Carolinas we get to enjoy making the real thing. Neat topic for a hub! :)

Hello Billy,

You missed out on some fun not being able to play in snow. Of course you also did not have to shovel the stuff nor drive on icy and snowy roads! No matter where one lives we can all enjoy the idea of Frosty the Snowman and enjoy snowmen ornaments as Christmas tree decorations. :-)

Hi Micky,

I think that Frosty the Snowman has been a part of our culture for many years whether or not we decorate with snowmen ornaments or even have Christmas tree decorations. That is because each and every year in the U.S. good old Frosty the Snowman is televised. Glad that you approve of Frosty! Haha!

Hello kookoo88,

Bet your snowmen decorations are cute both inside and outside your house. Flip flops in 10 degree weather! Guess they really ARE used to the cold. Ha! Am sure they have seen Frosty the Snowman on TV shows. Correct? Thanks for reading and commenting.

Hi Peggy. :) My wife likes snowman decorations and we have them all over the house. We even have one of those big snowglobes with snowmen in it for the yard. *chuckling*

As far as bundling up to go outside, my kids wear flip flops in 10 degree weather if i let them. We live high in the Rockies and they're used to the cold.

Hi dahoglund,

A pink elephant in place of a snowman! Bet that was something to see! Even if you did not make many snowmen, I'll bet you watched Frosty the Snowman on TV when growing up. As to Christmas Tree Decorations, Snowmen Ornaments make a certain amount of sense. We used to have icicle ornaments on our family tree also. Thanks for the comment.

Since I was youngest by seven years of four children I might have helped the older ones make one.Probably due to the diabete I later developed I have never been able to take much cold weather, so I didn't do to many outdoor things.

I do remember my brother-inlaws brothers making a very large elephant out of snow in a vacant lot across from where they lived and then coloring it pink. Later I was told that a drunk driver ran into it.
