Christmas Music and Decor

How many of you use reindeer ornaments in your Christmas decorating scheme as I do? And how many of you hear that famous song of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer being sung or played during the holiday season each year?

Reindeer pulling Santa Claus through the sky on his world-wind trip to deliver toys to good girls and good boys with Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer in the lead seems to be interwoven into the fabric of Christmas stories that have been passed down through generations of people.

Did you know the origin of this cute story?

Personally I never gave it much thought until I decided to write this hub.

I'll be happy to share some background information with you that you can casually mention at your next get together with family or friends.

They will be impressed at your seemingly endless knowledge. (Smile)

Montgomery Ward

The story of Montgomery Ward, the # 1 mail order business in 1872 was started by visionary Aaron Montgomery Ward with a small amount of money and a couple of partners who eventually left him as sole owner.

Mr. Montgomery's idea was to have goods delivered to people living in small towns all across America where they did not perhaps have competitive pricing for similar things in their areas.

He provided a catalog out of which they could select their purchases.

Most of the items would have been shipped by train back in the early days.

Those catalogs eventually became large "wish books" from which people could see fashions and dream of items that they might someday like to own.

The first retail store was opened in 1926 in Indiana and eventually expanded to become a department store chain in many towns and cities all across the United States of America.

From one store and in only 2 years, Montgomery Ward stores numbered 244 and kept exponentially growing after that.

Their main competitor was the Sears Roebuck and Company.

What does all this have to do with Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer?

Robert L. May

For many years Montgomery Ward gave away coloring books and decided that it might be less expensive to create one of their own.

An employee by the name of Robert L. May created the character of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer for one of those coloring books in the year 1939.

In the first year almost two and a half million copies of those coloring books were dispensed making Rudolph well known among children and their families.

Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer With Lyrics

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

The song of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer was written by American songwriter, Johnny Marks.

Mr. Marks wrote many Christmas songs and this one of Rudolph was patterned after a poem written by his brother-in-law, Robert L. May, the creator of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer .

Gene Autry recorded it in 1949 making it famous at that time. It has since been sung by many solo as well as group vocalists.

Deer decor

Deer decorations including deer statues to deer sculptures to deer lawn ornaments and deer collectibles, this is a popular theme and not just for Christmas and the holidays .

Often an outdoor statue of a deer is intermixed with shrubbery and or flowers embellishing a person's garden on a year round basis.

Inside a person's home one might find beautifully crafted collectible deer sculptures made out of different mediums or even in pictures or paintings adorning one's walls. We had a pewter looking one for years that adorned our house until I gave it away.

Of course during the holiday season reindeer ornaments, Christmas reindeer including lighted reindeer for the exterior of homes and businesses seem to proliferate.

Many of the homes in subdivisions all across the land have such Christmas decor and it adds an attractive element as well as sparkle to one's landscape. We have a lighted one that bobs his head up and down as if he is munching the grass that we put out during the Christmas season.

If you wish to add to your personal collection or even wish to give some reindeer ornaments, books or other related gifts, the choices are many. There is quite an assortment from which you can choose and many are provided for you right here. You need not fight the crowds to find that perfect gift!

Are you now humming the tune of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer as I am? (Smile)

Hi alocsin,

I don't think that we ever had a specific Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer ornament on any of our Christmas trees either, but deer ornaments are certainly popular at all times of the year as yard ornaments, etc. Thanks for your comment.

I don't know that anyone in my family has ever used a rudolph the red nosed reindeer ornament. The fact that there are such decorations is fascinating to me. Thanks for explaining their origins. Voting this Up and Interesting.

Hi alocsin,

I think that the history of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer is interesting. I never knew that it originated with Montgomery Ward and that Gene Autry actually made the singing of it popular...just to mention a few of the facts in this hub. Thanks for your comment and votes.

Of course, it seems rather obvious now that you've pointed out that Rudolph led to reindeer decorations. But I didn't make the connection until now. Voting this Up and Interesting.

Hi Marcene,

I do not know where this particular lighted outdoor reindeer and santa with sleigh can be purchased. Have you Googled and done a search? Perhaps you will find similar ones to this. Good luck! Hope you find what you like.

Marcene Jones 6 months ago

does anyone know where to buy the life sized reindeer outdoor decoration that is on the top of this site pictured. It's kinda goofy looking? Please...

It may be a short time before Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer will be leading the sleigh in the sky and even shorter until we start hearing Christmas music in the stores. They seem to rush the season more each year and with the economy such as it is, it will probably come even sooner.

Hello KoffeKlatch Gals,

Isn't it funny how we attach memories to childhood Christmases and other times! Like you, I felt sorry for Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and celebrated when he became the hero of the hour. Thanks for the visit and comment.

Rudolph was always my favorite Christmas-time character. I felt so sad for him when he was made fun of and left behind by the other reindeer. I loved it when he became a little reindeer hero. It brings back great memories of childhood Christmases.

Hello GusTheRedneck,

I'll look forward to reading your version of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer although the way you describe it, they would make for very funny looking reindeer ornaments runny noses and all. Haha!

Merry Christmas back "atcha" and may you be blessed with non-stop electricity so that you can keep typing out your hubs. :-)

GusTheRedneck Level 6 Commenter 17 months ago

Howdy Peggy - Well, when that "Rudoph" song came out of my alarm clock radio this morning and blasted me from my infrequent sleep, I made the promise to myself that my very next "Dumb Poem" would be "Rudolph, the Rain-Nosed Red Deer," the one with the runny nose.

I enjoyed the history of Rudolph and it just had to be that Monkey Ward would do at least something right, right?

Before I forget it, Merry Christmas. May your holiday and new year be gifted with plenty of printer ink.

Gus :-)~

Hi Merlin,

Aha! That explains it! Your pointing out that Santa making it all around the world in a single night without getting lost would be a bit hard to swallow is probably true. You KNOW how men are about asking directions! But now being told that Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and all the rest of Santa's reindeer were girls...they would probably have stopped and gotten directions if lost. Thanks for this enlightenment! Haha!

Hey Peggy,

Would I be considered a party pooper full oh Bah Humbug if I was to point out that the entire story of Rudolf and his Red Nose was a myth.... and in reality her name was Rudi.

Male Reindeer drop their antlers at the start of the winter, while the female retain theirs until after the give birth in the Spring time.

So it seems that if all the picture evidence of Santa and his team is accurate they were all Girls....!

Which leads to the second myth that they managed to navigate their way around the world in a single night without getting lost once.

Yeah Right !

Hi Celesta,

That is quite a story. Kids can be pretty bad about teasing other kids. So the song Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer forever changed your brother's name to Rudy! Wonder how many other kids had this happen to them? Thanks for the comment.

Hi dahoglund,

It is fun writing these hubs. Like you, I learned much about the genesis of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Thanks for adding your comment regarding Gene Autry's part in publicizing Rudolph.

Celesta 17 months ago

How well do I know the history of the story.

My brother, Rudolph was born in 1949. He was teased when the class sang Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer in the first grade. My mother came to his rescue when he came home crying. The next day she went to his school and told the teacher and the class to call him Rudy. His new name echoed loudly throughout the community in a matter of two days. He has been called Rudy ever since. Despite the teasing, this song remained Rudy’s favorite song and mine. Rudy makes me glow just like the Red Nose Reindeer. Who doesn’t like Rudolph?

I enjoyed reading this hub. It brought back the memories of what happened to my little brother's first Christmas in public school.

Hi Micky,

I had to laugh at your comment. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer probably never thought of getting a lawyer and suing and I am sure that he probably never got therapy as it was not the "in" thing back in those days. Once he was accepted into the group of other reindeer and recognized for his unique talents he was then the "rock star" of his group and the other reindeer probably made appropriate apologies and all of them cozied up to him to be friends.

Santa was probably too busy overseeing the elves work to know of those early slights to Rudolph but did hold his red nose in high respect. "All's well that ends well" as the old saying goes!

dahoglund Level 7 Commenter 17 months ago

I learned something new.I was unaware of the Montgomery Ward connection or that Rudolph was known before the Gene Autry recording. Autry only recorded it because his wife liked it, since it reminded her of the Ugly Duckling fable.Up and useful.

Oh Peggy! I always loved Rudolf and I never knew the other reindeer were so mean! I can't believe Santa allowed these shenanigans. Did Rudolf get a lawyer? Counciling/therapy? I love all versions of the song. Thank you Dear Peggy!
