Pictures of Tucked Away Houston, Texas Escape ~ Tiny Boxwoods ~ Cafe and Nursery

By

Fun Place to Go

Combining cafe dining with browsing for nursery plants and accessories and other unique discoveries inside of a gift shop, what could be better? My neighbor recently invited me to join her for lunch at Tiny Boxwoods which is a special tucked away type of Houston escape from the ordinary. Pictures will be shown for those who might also be interested in discovering this hide-a-way place in the middle of our large metropolitan city of Houston, Texas.

If one was unaware of its existence, it would be easy to overlook.

Of course, many people in the Highland Village neighborhood bordering River Oaks would probably just as soon keep it that way.

But news of places like this are hard to be kept a secret.

My neighbor and I certainly had a fun day at this upscale casual place!

Plant nursery supplies

Of course one can find some unique lawn ornamentation or special jardinieres to hold one's plants.

After all...this is an upscale area of town surrounded by homes with price-tags that can range from moderately expensive on up to the stratosphere of bulging pocketbooks.

The giant concrete acorn that dotted one area of the manicured lawn inside the gates between the cafe and nursery, certainly made a statement.

I'd like to see the tree that it fell from...but obviously be no where close to those branches when it spiraled downward! After all, I remember reading about that apple falling from a tree and Isaac Newton's theory of gravitation from my long ago school days!

Plants, nursery supplies and eye-catching adornments like these concrete creations can all be found at Tiny Boxwoods and the Thompson and Hanson Nursery.

Chalkboard menu

My friend and I decided to order our lunch and enjoy that first before we would stroll through the rest of the nursery and gift shop.

Inside of the Tiny Boxwoods Cafe it is a bustling place during their lunch hours from 11 AM to 2 PM Tuesdays through Saturdays.  Not to worry, however, if one misses the 2 PM deadline.  There are still menu offerings from 2 until 5 PM at which time the dinner menu is launched.  Closing time is 10 PM.

They are also open for breakfast from 7 AM until the time when lunches are served and I have heard good things about their brunch menu on Sundays from 9 AM until 2 PM.

Menu items are hand-written on a large chalkboard and obviously when the fresh items offered for the day are sold out, those items can be easily erased.

Dining alfresco

The day was bright and sunny but a bit cool. The inside spaces at the long bar and other tables and chairs were filled, but there were still some outside tables available.

It was fun sitting outside and dining alfresco while getting to enjoy the landscaping and also getting to do a little people watching.

For outside dining patron's comfort, tall umbrella shaped heaters generate welcomed heat (when needed) and the air near us was warmed sufficiently to have the best of all scenarios. We soaked up a little Vitamin D from the bright sunlight while basking in the cool and crisp outdoor air.

Umbrellas can also shelter one from too many rays of the warming sun.

Garden Centers

Most garden centers are huge places covering quite a bit of ground in Houston. This one at Thompson + Hanson nursery is petite in comparison.

After a delicious lunch ( I tried the much touted buffalo burger to great satisfaction and my friend had a vegetarian sandwich to her liking ) we strolled the grounds of the nursery.

An assortment of various sized planters already made up with colorful plants can be acquired to grace one's home patio or garden.

A big selection of unique planters can be purchased or ordered out of catalogs if the colors or sizes do not meet expectations of what is already displayed on the grounds.

Giant balls made out of grapevines and strung with twinkling lights could add nighttime sparkle to trees or be utilized in different ways for charming effect.

Nursery plants both common and more uncommon could be seen.

Since my friend and I both have an interest in gardening, this was also an enjoyable way to spend some time after having had lunch.

Gift shop at the Thompson/Hanson Nursery

This is a great place for browsing and possibly getting new decorating ideas or adding that special "something" to one's home decor. Everything from table settings to jewelry to note-cards and more can be found in this charming shop.

Hi dahoglund,

It was my first buffalo burger ever to have eaten. I did have an order of buffalo meatloaf one time in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and it was also good. Thanks for the additional comment.

I have been to Tiny Boxwoods several times and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience each time. It is so charming and sophisticated and the food is great! It is also a great place to just sit and people watch. I have seen some local celebraties there sans their "t.v. make-up"! Thanks for a great hub, Peggy.

Hi Eiddwen,

Tiny Boxwoods is so tucked away behind walls and a gate and the ambiance is like walking into another time and place...not the big bustling city in which it resides. Happy to be introducing such a spot to you and others in far distant lands. Glad that you liked the pictures. Thanks for your comment.
