Homeless Animals

In Houston, Texas fortunate are the homeless animals that kind hearted souls bring to the newly erected Citizens for Animal Protection animal shelter on the west side of town. Many pictures will be shown of this state of the art animal shelter located at 17555 Katy Freeway.

Citizens for Animal Protection ( fondly abbreviated and known locally as CAP ) has been in existence since 1972 serving the needs of homeless and/or abused and neglected animals.

The dedicated staff and many volunteers cheerfully did their jobs caring for the animals who were delivered to their doorsteps in previously very cramped quarters.

This bright and cheerful new building is not only beautiful for the animals who call it their temporary home, but the daily jobs to facilitate aiding the dogs, cats and other animals can be accomplished with much more ease and needed elbow room by the people working there.

Pet Adoptions

Falling in love with a baby animal is easy. Most of them are so very cute whether they are curled up asleep with their litter-mates or actively playing.

But deciding to take a baby animal whether it is a kitten or puppy ( for instance ) should be well considered and evaluated before taking on that commitment.

Expenses include not only food, water and shelter but normal veterinary care and additional care for when they become ill or injured. Animals are just like human beings in that respect and can come down with many of the same illnesses that people experience and others more specific to their breed.

But there are other considerations in addition to the money that these pets will cost.

They are all sentient beings who also need our love and that love should extend throughout their lifetime.

Loving a pet means spending quality time with them; gently but firmly training them and putting up with their foibles. Who hasn't had a puppy chew up a favorite shoe or have an accident inside the house before being fully potty trained?

What do we get for our efforts?

Pure and unconditional love is the answer!

Animal Adoption Center

Pets of all types including dogs, cats, hamsters and rabbits end up in animal shelters like Citizens for Animal Protection for a number of reasons.

Sometimes the owners of such pets die and there is no one to care for their beloved pets.

Tragedies can occur like hurricanes that destroy homes and separate people and their pets.  Many pets ended up being shipped to Houston after Hurricane Katrina swept through New Orleans years ago.

Illnesses of the owners can sometimes cause them and their pets to be sadly separated.

Occasionally due to loss of a job and little income, people regretfully turn their pets in to a shelter hoping that some loving family will come along and make another good home for their furry animal. Reasons like this can be heart-breaking.

And then there are the thoughtless people who take a darling little kitten or puppy and when it becomes full grown and is no longer quite as cute and cuddly, turn them out on the streets thinking that they can make it on their own. Of course this is fallacious thinking and can cause much suffering and even death to the animals.

Unlike wolves who hunt in packs or wild cats who are used to stalking and killing prey in their normal habitats, domesticated animals do not have the same instincts nor territory in which to adequately care for themselves and any offspring.

Oh yes, they will raid garbage cans and drink water out of curbs. They will become diseased and possibly even rabid posing a threat to other animals and even possibly people.

Turning an animal that was once a pet loose on the streets or dumping them in neighborhoods or the countryside hoping that someone will come along to care for them is a form of heartless cruelty.

Animal shelters exist for the sole purpose of taking in and rescuing animals from the horrors of abandonment and/or abuse.  And until they are adopted, at the least they are fed, sheltered and well tended...even loved by the many volunteers and staff at these shelters.

If some are eventually euthanized, at least they will have been dealt with compassionately in the interim and given the best chance for a new life. Being painlessly put to sleep is not the worst thing that can happen when one considers all the alternative things that can happen to a pet that has been abandoned to the streets.

Cats for Adoption

Citizens for Animal Protection in Houston has the cat section separated from the dog section of the new building. In fact they are at opposite ends of the building so that the cats are not disturbed by the barking of dogs.

Each end of the building has its counterpart in-so-far as intake areas; evaluation areas; surgery; food preparation...even isolation areas for the pets as necessary.

The laundry area is mammoth and is in continual use for cleanliness purposes.

The kittens and cats are well tended and played with and loved until new homes can be found.

For the older cats who have been there a while they have a special room in which they can interact and be on display.

Speaking of special rooms...they are provided in several places in the Citizens for Animal Protection shelter where new "parents" can interact with their prospective new pets to see how they interact with one another.

We saw many people using those rooms on the day that my husband and I toured CAP.

The new site of CAP consists of 3 1/2 acres of land.  Not only are the rooms for the animals spacious inside, but there are areas outside in the back where the dogs are walked twice daily and there is even an area where they can be turned loose to run and play on occasion.  Outside caged areas let them indulge in a little fresh air and sunshine.

Charity Navigator and CAP

For people wishing to donate money to help charity institutions do their job, one should be certain that one's money is being spent wisely and not just going to needless overhead expenses or huge staff salaries. Many people (sadly) through the years have donated hard earned dollars thinking that they were helping a good cause only to have a very minuscule fraction of their money being put to good and purposeful work towards their chosen cause.

Here is where Charity Navigator comes to the aid. It is a 501 (c) 3 charity that delves into the financial health of thousands of charities accepting no money from any of the charities being evaluated. They determine how much money is raised and how it is spent and at what cost.

Their top rating is 4 stars and Citizens for Animal Protection has been awarded that rating for year after year. A 4 star rating means that the charity "Exceeds industry standards and outperforms most charities in its Causes."

It is so wonderful knowing that our love of animals and donations to help them are being handled with such thrift and care. For that reason, my husband and I are happy to spread the word about this wonderful charity and even have Citizens for Animal Protection in our wills.

On average about 500 animals each month find new homes from Citizens for Animal Protection. That is a whopping 6,000 animals per year! They do much more with outreach programs; spaying and neutering, etc. Here is their website if you care to find out more about this wonderful Houston based charity or wish to donate to help further their good works: http://cap4pets.org

Hello Valeria Casco,

Our Skippy is already taken. Haha! Go to animal shelters and they may have a Skippy already named or choose a puppy and give him that name. Hope your Skippy brings much joy into your life.

Peggy W. Hi. What a wonderful and caring person you are.

This new shelter for ill treated and neglected animals is absolutely beautiful. I do understand that not all these animals have been treated badly.

Maybe its the first time that some of these animals have been taken care of as they should be.

Your photo's, as always are wonderful.

I do not,nor will I ever understand why some folks believe they have the right to treat animals in such cruel ways.

Where would any of these shelters be without the volunteers, they do such wonderful work.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading about this new shelter and your very special way of alerting folks to the plight of all these beautiful animals.

Thanks for sharing it with us. Voted up. :) :)

Hello Freya,

Yes, people are interviewed before they can adopt a pet from most animal shelters over here. They want to make sure that the people understand the importance of making it a lifetime committment when they adopt and also to make sure that they have the right kind of environment for them. There is a fee which covers shots and spaying or neutering of the animals.

This is undoubtedly one of the fanciest (state of the art) animals shelters currently in existence. Thanks for your visit and comment.

Wow! Is that really animal shelter? And did people really got interview for adopting pet? Oh wow! Some of the room look really great! Not just casual pet shelter I have in mind. Indonesia not really have pet shelter. If there is one or two, it is run by animal lovers who feel sad about these stray animals. We never get any question if we want to adopt pet, mostly when on the street, stray animals in easy to be find unless if you want to have long hair or special breed animal then you have to adopt it from pet shop. Interesting info indeed. Thank you, Peggy. ^^

What a great hub depicting what a wonderful place the new CAP shelter is in Houston! Thanks for writing about something so important. Animals need us to speak for them and this hub speaks volumes - thanks Peggy! I can't wait to visit and see this beautiful facility myself.

Hello SUSIE DUZY,

It is true. People that have pets not only have their love and affection for all of those years as well as their non-judgemental good company...but it serves to extend people's lives studies have shown. Thanks for your comment.

Hi dahoglund,

We have been told the same. With the exception of our first Irish Setter (which was given to us) we have always had mutts. Now we have Skippy, my mother's Pomeranian who was also a rescue dog. People can find purebreds at animal shelters as well as the many loveable mutts. Thanks for the votes and comment.

dahoglund profile image

dahoglund Level 7 Commenter 13 months ago

Over the years I have gotten to like mutts. I am never sure why people will pay big buck for a pure bred dog when they are not looking for anything a particular breed has to offer. Maybe it is the "brand name" attitude.Cross bred dogs are often healthier. at least according to our vet.

Up and useful hub.

Hello Granny's House,

Yes, like you, I hope more people will think of going to their local animal shelters when the time is right to adopt an animal. There is every type of breed available and the mixed breeds can be the best of all choices! People in Houston owe it to themselves to check out the new Citizens for Animal Protection! Thanks for your comment.

Hi agusfanani,

Nice as this new animal shelter of Citizens for Animal Protection is...I think that most of the animals in there would still prefer living in a home where they are loved and can share their love with people. Of course for those that have been abused by people...this is a safe haven where hopefully they can learn to trust again. Thanks for your comment.

Not many people or institutions pay attention to animal shelter and here I can see a very decent one. Those animals must be happy living in CAP and some not want to have adoptive parents.

Peggy wonderful hub on the CAP animal shelter - such an important part of a community where unfortunately there are so many pets given up and abandoned and so many of us that enjoy our pets and animals. Sadly in these tough times people are abandoning pets more than ever.

Over the years we have adopted several great dogs from shelters and have had lots of great memories - and so do the dogs :)

dearabbysmom 13 months ago

What an awesome facility. We humans have domesticated these animals, then all too often ignore our responsibilities tied to that action. It's great to see people make these precious animals a priority.

HI Peggy W, another excellent hub giving me another insight into your world. I have had three rescue dogs in the last 30 years and have not regretted any one of them. They have returned the love and affection a thousand times over. Sadly We lost "Old Katy" two weeks ago which was heart breaking. It will take a long time to get over the loss. We had her for eleven years and she was an enormous part of our lives. Thank you for sharing this beautiful hub. Rated up.

Hi Austinstar,

I know the feeling! Our 2 cats and 1 dog are enough for us at this time, but at least we know where to go when the time comes to fill our home with more love from these furry angels. My husband made me PROMISE that we wouldn't bring home any new ones when we recently visited there. It is hard when all those loving eyes are looking at you! At least these CAP animals are well tended and cared for until they find permanent homes. Thanks for your comment.

Hi Mary,

THANK YOU for your informative comment. People can go to the CAP website and find out many more details than what was written here in this hub but you made a good point. Donating used household furnishings and items to the CAP thrift shop is another way funds can be raised to help the animals and every nickel and dime counts.

Knowing what the old animal shelter looked like and how cramped the facility was...you will be absolutely amazed at the new one.

Thanks to the continuing support of all the generous donors out there this new CAP is state of the art and will be able to help many more animals find good homes long into the future.

Hello Eiddwen,

Citizens for Animal Protection is such a cheery place! Some people have joked that the animals ending up there will want to stay. When I was in the cat area taking pictures I saw one of the workers sitting on the floor petting one of the cats in a cage nearer the floor. Obviously she must have refreshed the food or water, but took time out to give this cat special attention. So many of the volunteers get to love and shower these animals with some TLC until they get adopted.

Another program they have is the fostering of pets where people take an animal home during the week and then bring them back only on weekends to be shown for adoption. People adopting these animals have no doubt about how they act in a family situation because the families that have them can share every detail with new prospective owners.

I know a friend who has been doing this for years...and guess what...not surprisingly she decided to keep some of them instead of letting them go back in to be adopted. Everyone involved with Citizens for Animal Protection really love animals! No surprise there. Nice people!

Thanks for your comment and vote up.

Mary 13 months ago

Thank you so much for writing about this topic. Our animal friends need all the help they can get. I have not yet toured the new facility but we still donate all our unwanted household items to the CAP Thrift Store at their old location on the Katy Freeway between Dairy Ashford and Kirkwood. It's a great thrift store. I hope your readers visit the thrift store soon.

Oh what a beautiful hub. I have always loved animals of every kind. It really is so awful what is done to them by man. I don't think I could work somewhere like this or I would want to bring so many home with me.

Thank you for this one that I vote up and up.

take care

Hi Darlene,

I know that they also had rabbits and gerbils for adoption at the time of our visit. Citizens for Animal Protection is not only an amazingly cheerful place to visit but as a state of the art animal shelter will hopefully be a prototype of ones to be built in the future given enough donated dollars. Houston, Texas has had some very generous benefactors but it also takes the nickels and dimes from less affluent folks to achieve such a great animal shelter. I know that you have done your part to help homeless animals. Thanks for your comment.
