Holistic Health ~ Mindful Meditation in Wellness Program ~ HoOponopono
71A friend of mine sent me a link to a word that was unfamiliar to me in an email and after reading a bit about it, that word has everything to do with holistic health, mindful meditation and a wellness program that each of us could incorporate into our daily lives at zero cost.
What was that word?
Ho'oponopono
Most everything that is transmitted via email from this particular friend is always interesting. She is one of the most cheerful and positive people that I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and she is generous with helping others in any way that she can.
Perhaps this Ho'oponopono accounts for her goodness?
For those of you who are unfamiliar with that word, this hub will serve as an introduction.

Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Applying this practice of Ho'oponopono into our lives has everything to do with forgiveness and reconciliation which not only enhances our spirituality but it would truly aid our emotional health as we navigate the turbulent waters of everyday life.
This word originated in Hawaii.
Apparently this Ho'oponopono has been practiced for many years in the islands and has spread to other places around the globe.
The Place of Refuge (Pu'uhonua o Honaunau) is a sacred place on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Prior to 1819 people who would have broken laws (kapus) and ordinarily have been put to death were forgiven their "sins" by resident priests if they could get to this special place without being caught ahead of time.
My husband and I were fortunate to have been able to see this location while on a full day tour of the Big Island many years ago. It is a tranquil place which also has a spiritual feeling much as most cemeteries do. Many of the past chiefs bones are interred in the temple on this site.
Learning about this Place of Refuge which enabled people to be forgiven their trespasses and resume their lives after reconciliation was interesting.
Another physical place that comes to mind are the confessional booths in many Catholic churches around the world.
People go there and recite their "sins" aloud to a priest who then listens and perhaps councils the person ending with some assigned prayers in order that the penitent receives absolution for those broken commandments.
The priest serves as the intermediary between the penitent and God. Ideally if the person asking for forgiveness is serious about it and is truly repentant hoping never again to make the same mistake, this can not only be a spiritual healing moment, but can affect physical health as well.
Being forgiven can be a freeing experience in more ways than one!
Forgiveness and the Freedom of Letting go
Problem Solving Steps
Obviously Ho'oponopono goes a bit deeper and anyone wishing to become more educated can click on many links and study this further.
From what I learned in my research is that this practice can be condensed into four simple phrases which if said over and over again in one's mind or even aloud and truly meant has a natural health effect of shedding burdens that might be wearing a person down emotionally and physically.
As most of us know, our emotions can easily spill over into our bodies and become physical ailments as well.
What are those four simple phrases?
I'm Sorry
Please Forgive Me
Thank You
I Love You
According to Wikipedia, Ho'oponopono is literally applied in the court systems of Hawaii with respect to juvenile offenders of the law. Problem solving, dispute resolutions and family counseling all take place under the umbrella theory of using this practice of Ho'oponopono.
If past memories of slights, offences or worse can be put in this light of true forgiveness and love, only good can come of it.
Carrying around the burden of anger and resentment weighs us down and impacts our interactions and dealings with others in ways small and large.
A sense of calm and peace and well being is a wonderful place within ourselves of which to aspire when approaching people and things outside of ourselves.
Most wellness programs that are the most efficient encompass not only the physical needs of a person but the psychological and spiritual needs as well for best results.
That old Biblical saying "Physician heal thyself" alludes to this aspect of dealing with our own defects before we worry about or address those in others.
There is another saying..."People who live in glass houses should not throw stones." Are any of us human beings perfect? What right do we have to criticize others?
Learning about this new word ( to me ) of Ho'oponopono opens up all sorts of soul searching.
Addressing problems of any sort with this mindful filter of Ho'oponopono firmly in place would certainly address the outcome in different ways!

Deep Meditation Experience
Ho'oponopono seems to go hand in hand with not only relaxation but a form of healing meditation as well.
If we can truly forgive ourselves and others and learn to love others as our good Hubpage friend Micky Dee constantly admonishes with his reminder of the Golden Rule which has to do with treating others as we, ourselves, would like to be treated...this entire world would be a much better place in which to live.
It makes sense that we need some quiet time for this type of mindful meditation and incorporating the values of Ho'oponopono into our lives.
Meditation music has the effect of making it easy to relax. It is not filled with words and with or without accompanying beautiful pictures as are on some of the videos in this hub, it allows one's mind to find a more quiet space.
In that quiet space one can find peace.
When I was sitting by my mother's bedside in hospice one year ago last night and today, the day of her death, there was a television set in the room. My mother often went to sleep with television on and with that in mind, I was trying to find something that would be appropriate.
It is doubtful in those last moments that the outside world had much of an impact any longer as her life was slipping away.
However, when I found a channel that simply played what I would call meditation music, it offered me some comfort as I watched and kept a vigil with my mother.
Accompanying the very repetitive and soothing music were images of a night sky with twinkling stars when it was actually nighttime in reality. As the sky was lightening outside and daylight was approaching, on the television screen similar images appeared. A glorious sunrise filled the screen and turned night into day.
Given the occasion of quietly sitting by my mother's bedside, knowing what was about to transpire, that meditative music offered me solace in a way that nothing else could have at the time.

An awesome hub. Very useful.
I've heard about it a while ago when I was listening to one of Joe Vitale's CDs. It was new to me at the time as well, but ever since then, I always associate the two. Nice introduction hub on it, btw.
I had never heard of Ho'oponopono but I am a believer in forgiveness. Sometimes things are hard to forget but we need to learn how to forgive so we can move forward. Thank you for the great hub!
Peggy it is a must in sports and stressful vocations that require a clear mind such as trading, surgery or legal counsel. In reality all modern life is so stressful all could benefit from practicing mindfulness.
Peggy I am a huge believer in the positive benefits of mindful meditation - a lot of work to get the discipline but well worth it - lots of great self help ads you have selected to get the process going - excellent research.
There is definitely a mind body connection. I don't know what modern medicine only chooses to treat the body. Great hub, Voted up!
excellent article and highlights the wonderful benifits of mindful meditation.
Thank You for such interesting information. I am not sure how to pronounce the word but to make it a part one one's daily life sounds wonderful
Dear Peggy! I just said on the last hub that your greatest always seems to be your last. This one is just wonderful! The music, the words! God bless you dear Peggy!
Good Information. You have done your research.
This is a nice hub. A few years ago I read about Ho'oponopono and decided to incorporated it in my daily meditation yoga exercise program. I have practiced meditation yoga daily while listening to meditation music since 1986.
It is my quiet time to be alone in the privacy of my own home to relax, pray, forgive and let go.
When we let go, we remove the blocks to our being free to forgive and Love completely.
You have great information. I love something related with meditation. This is natural healing without side effect. We can do this in our spare time. I love all the video. You have done a great job. I liked it. I give my vote to you. Thanks for writing this, Peggy. You still my favorite writer. My pray always for you. Take care
Blessing and hugs,
This is an awesome hub on forgiveness and Ho'oponopono.
I loved the videos and the example you gave about the value of meditation during your mother's final hours. I'm sure she sensed your peaceful presence and love, even though she couldn't view the meditation channel you put on the TV. When one is peaceful within one's core, it radiates to everyone around them.
Thanks for sharing these keys to holistic health.
That was awonderful experience reading yours hub. Very interesting. I learnedso much from it. Thank you.
Really lovely hub. I'm very sorry about your mother. The moment, however, sounds peaceful. Thank you for sharing.
Peggy,
This is a great hub. Meditation is very powerful. You have given a wealth of information, resources and videos on the healing of forgiveness. The soft music is very relaxing and comforting. Another wonderful and inspiring hubpage on Holistic Health-Mindful Meditation.
We have got quite a bit of snow but not as bad as elsewhere. we were in Minneapolis last week and I think they got about twice as much. It is cold though.
My dearest Peggy, you have done an excellent Blog on the healing modality that I love the most - Ho'oponopono!
Thank you for taking the time to do this and help educate more people to how to help themselves.
Love you!
Peggy, I had never heard of this before but it is so interesting to me. My son is a Christian counselor and he is not a traditional counselor like we often think of but the process he uses is almost identical to Ho'oponopono. He worked with me on a few experiences from years ago that were still painful to me and it was like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders when we finished the process. It is so interesting that they use it in the court also. This is a very interesting hub. The music was awesome. Voted/rated beautiful.
I once did a good deal of reading in things like Yoga, meditation, hypnosis, book called Pscho-cybernetics and such. I found the all seemed to have some common elements, most of which I am not good at. Relaxation and concentration were foremost. In some cases like hypnosis and self hypnosis the ability to just "let go." It appears that these qualities also apply here.
