Golfing Umbrellas and Gene Kelly Singing in the Rain

By

Getting caught in the rain...

What made me think of Golfing Umbrellas, Gene Kelly and "Singing in the Rain" was pure happenstance.

Just yesterday my husband and I were taking a late morning walk in our subdivision.

We had already taken my mother's Pomeranian dog, Skippy, for his short walk and after returning him to the house, we ventured out for a longer walk.

Skippy has a mind of his own!

He has his short walk down pat and if we try and get him to walk further, he literally sits down and/or pulls making it look as though we are dog-napping him.

Long ago we decided that if we want to get some decent exercise it is not worth "arguing" with Skippy.

Umbrellas

As it turned out, we could have used a couple of umbrellas on our walk.

The weather forecast was for a 30% chance of rain later in the day.

We should have known better!

The sky was cloudy and grey and it has been abnormally hot and humid for this time of year, even for Houston standards.

You can probably guess the rest...

Yes, we got caught in the rain!

We were quite distant from our home so had no choice but to walk in the rain on our return home.

Walking in the rain made us think of the wonderful movie made years ago with the tap dancing Gene Kelly and the great and uplifting song he sang about "Singing in the Rain."

My husband and I may not have been tap dancing nor singing, but since the rain was lightly coming down hitting our faces and arms with cool droplets and there was no hint of thunder or lightening, we actually enjoyed ourselves.

Why not?

There was no alternative, so we made the best of it and actually resurrected memories of this delightful movie that we have enjoyed seeing countless times.

If one is looking for a "feel good" type of movie entertainment..."Singing in the Rain" should be on every-one's list!

Large umbrellas

Ah...but what does this have to do with golf umbrellas you might be thinking?

There are all types of umbrellas.

Fancy umbrellas made in all colors and patterns with frilled edges or other adornments can undoubtedly be found to match a person's clothing and style.

Personalized umbrellas can be imprinted with whatever is desired.

A windproof umbrella is a particularly nice feature.

Have any of you been caught in a driving rainstorm combined with fierce wind and had your umbrella flip in the opposite direction?

I have had that happen and most often at the most inopportune times.

Is there ever a good time for that to occur?

One nice thing about large umbrellas in general and also golfing umbrellas is that just because of their construction and larger surface, they are most often windproof as well.

Gene Kelly

Gene Kelly's full name was Eugene Curran Kelly and he was born on August 23, 1912.

After high school due to economic circumstances he was forced to work to help his family but did manage to get a degree in economics.

His mother had encouraged his dancing lessons and with his athleticism and natural talent he started a dance studio with his family. He was proficient in all types of dance from tap dancing to ballet as well as modern and everything else.

His teaching methods were well recognized.

Gene Kelly dropped out of law school to pursue his career which eventually led him to not only being a dancer and great instructor, but he also successfully became an actor, singer, choreographer and well known film director and producer.

He worked primarily in America but also in Europe.

Gene Kelly remains best known for the films American in Paris which was in 1951 and Singin' in the Rain which was in 1952.

He received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Screen Actor's Guild and also the American Film Institute.

Dying on February 2, 1996 he will forever be remembered for his boyish good looks and talent and for his part in musical films from the 1940's and 1950's when that genre was in its heyday.

Umbrella

Thanks to our need for an umbrella yesterday...although we obviously did not have one handy...all of these thoughts of Gene Kelly, Singing in the Rain and Golfing Umbrellas (simply because they are large and could have nicely shielded us from the rain) came flooding into my mind. No pun intended! Hope that you enjoyed this slice of life and this hub that evolved from our walk in the neighborhood.

When you think of Gene Kelly and Dancing in the Rain do you also think of umbrellas?

  • Yes...since Gene Kelly used an umbrella as an important prop in the movie.
  • I have never seen that movie but will associate umbrellas and that movie together now.

Hi Mrs. J.B.,

I know what you mean. After writing this hub about golfing umbrellas and Gene Kelly Singing in the Rain, that image and music stayed with me for quite some time. Thanks for reading and leaving a comment.

Throughout this hub I kept picturing Gene Kelly swinging around on the lamp post. Thanks for a great hub.

Hi Cheryl,

Getting caught in the rain brought back memories of the great and entertaining film with Gene Kelly and Singing in the Rain. My husband still has his golfing umbrella but I have the smaller verions of umbrellas. Thanks for the comment and glad that you enjoyed the videos.

This is so good. I love your sense of humor. You are correct we all need a golfing umbrella and to remember Gene Kelly Singing in the Rain. Let's enjoy great momemts in history. Great videos and awesome tribute to the talented Gene Kelly.

Hi Micky,

Sounds like your umbrella is a good one! Engulfing one by way of a large umbrella can be good if the rain is coming at one from all angles. Many times I have had my regular umbrella in use and have gotten soaked anyway with perhaps the only exception being the very top part of my head. Haha! Hope you enjoyed the look back at Gene Kelly and Singing in the Rain, etc. Thanks for the comment.

I have the Sport Brella X-Large Umbrella but in blue. These are made with a point for sticking into the ground and it engulfs you a bit. God bless Peggy!

Hi Kind Regards,

Peggy W, I was Hub Hopping and your opening lines grabbed me and before I knew it, I was happily reading along until the end. I was thrilled that you and your husband were happy in the rain instead of how the poor rain is often regarded. I've always loved rain and umbrellas and that movie, so what a wonderful respite spending time with your Hub. Thank you, Kind Regards

Hi Mike,

I agree with you as to its being a shame that movies like the one Gene Kelly was in...Singing in the Rain...and others are not typically made anymore. They were so much fun and family friendly. Thanks for reading and responding to this hub about umbrellas and more. We surely could have used one or two on our walk!

Hello Happyboomernurse,

So glad you enjoyed this hub about Gene Kelly and Singing in the Rain as well as large umbrellas...golfing and others. It was perhaps serendipitous that we were caught out in the rain! Haha! As to a feel good hub...I agree. It was fun finding all of these videos, etc. and thinking back to those great movies. Thanks for the comment. That umbrella that you found that would shelter 2 at the beach...sounds like a good one!

Hi Peggy! This was a great hub, and you are so skilled at describing the events of your life. It has been a long time since I saw anything with Gene Kelly. He was so talented and it was fun to watch a few of the videos you offered here. That was a great era in movies, and it is a shame that films like that aren't made any more.

Thanks for the wonderful tribute to Gene Kelly, and for sharing your own moment in the rain. Take care.

Mike

Hi Peggy,

What a great, feel-good hub! I thoroughly enjoyed it and loved the catchy title.

The videos were fun to watch and I clicked on the Sport Brella X-large umbrella add and learned something new- it's large enough for two to sit under at the beach!

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Prasetio,

My husband is not one who loves to dance and so now after 40 years of marriage I am woefully out of practice. However we both enjoy seeing the old Gene Kelly films like Singing in the Rain and others where he is singing and tap dancing his way into our hearts. Glad you liked this hub about that and golfing umbrellas. Take care and thanks for the comment and vote up.

This is so beautiful, Peggy. I am glad to see how you love dance. I thought you and your husband really enjoy to dance very much. Singing in the rain is a beautiful song, I really love the video you gave to us. I give my rate up for you. Take care!

Hi dahoglund,

In Houston we carry umbrellas in our cars at all times. We have many pop up showers in this area...about a 20% chance almost every afternoon all summer long is the norm. When traveling I used to carry a mini-umbrella "just in case." Glad this hub about Gene Kelly and Singing in the Rain brought back some good memories for you. Thanks for the comment and Happy Thanksgiving!

Hello Billy,

Watching Gene Kelly Singing in the Rain and dancing is as much fun no matter how many times one has viewed this classic. I also enjoyed the 3 tenors. Thanks for commenting on this umbrellas hub...golfing and more.

Peggy W 18 months ago

Hi agusfanani,

My husband and I weren't exactly dancing but we were stepping lively! Haha! I think that Gene Kelly dancing and Singing in the Rain is a favorite movie for everybody that sees it. We surely could have used some golfing (or any kind) of umbrellas that day! Thanks for the comment.

dahoglund 18 months ago

I was a kid when I saw "Singing in the rain" and I don't recall much about it except, if memory serves me, Debbie Reynolds who I probably fell in love with. I also became a fan of Donald O'Conner for quite awhile at least until "Francis the Talking Mule" which was probably the inspiration for Mr. Ed on TV.

I used umbrellas when I used bus transportation. Since retiring I seldom use on or think about them.

Classic footage of Gene Kelly Singing in the rain - the 3 tenors version is superb. Nice selection of umbrellas Peggy.

I watched the excerpt of this movie and I always smiled when remember it. I can imagine how fun you were when you danced under the rain with your husband.
