"Maybe next year" is often heard around Wrigley Field, the site of their home games.
According to Daisaku Ikeda, "The determination to win is the better part of winning."

Chicago Cubs
This Chicago team which is the oldest active team in all of the major American sports teams (including football, basketball and hockey in addition to baseball) has gone through some name changes starting out with being called The White Stockings in their inaugural season of 1876.
Originally playing their games at the West Side Grounds, Chicago won the very first National League pennant which was the top prize at the time. What a great way to start!
By 1902 their name after several other renditions officially became the Chicago Cubs.
Between the years of 1905 to 1912, four pennants and two world series had been won! The two world series were in 1907 and 1908. Chicago Cubs fans must have been wild with excitement in those years!
Wrigley Field
Just as other professional sports teams go through different ownership hands, the Chicago Cubs are no different.
William Wrigley, Jr. (owner of the Wrigley Chewing Gum fame and fortune) had shared ownership rights of the Cubs for a time.
Weeghman Park which was a new sports stadium built in 1914 became known as Wrigley Field with the naming rights secured by Wrigley.
The Chicago Cubs baseball team have played there since 1916 sharing 50 years of that time with the NFL football team, the Chicago Bears.
The current owner of the Cubs is Joe Ricketts, founder of T D Ameritrade with a family trust format.

A Cubs Curse?
The Cubs won national league pennants in 1929, 1932, 1935, and 1938.
But something unusual happened in 1945. A gentleman by the name of Billy Sianis purchased two tickets to a Cubs game...one for himself, and one for his pet goat. Due to the peculiarity of having an animal at the game, and one that was somewhat smelly at that, Mr. Wrigley insisted that Mr. Sianis remove his goat.
In a huff, Mr. Sianis said the following: "The Cubs, they ain't gonna win no more."
Whether one believes in curses or not...the Cubs lost game 4 in that series and this was the start of a very long dry spell with regard to wins.
Persistence pays!
"Permanence, perseverance and persistence in spite of all obstacles, discouragement, and impossibilities: It is this, that in all things distinguishes the strong soul from the weak." ~Thomas Carlyle ~
Despite the Billy Sianis curse, Chicago Cubs fans won their National League Central Division titles in 2007 and 2008. They are now awaiting a World Series win!
"You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream." ~ C.S. Lewis ~

Because of the Chicago Cubs long history, the list is also a long one of Hall of Famers who have at one time played baseball in Chicago. Dizzy Dean, Johnny Evers and Ernie Banks are just a small sample of some great baseball players on that list.
Central Division members of the Baseball National League, the Cubs current rivals in that same division are the Cincinnati Reds, Houston Astros, Milwaukee Brewers, Pittsburgh Pirates and the St. Louis Cardinals.
There is much more that could be written about this Chicago Cubs Baseball team. Think of purchasing some sports memorabilia and gift items for the Cubs fans on your list! And if you are the type of person that likes to root for the underdog, let's all help the Cubs break that Billy Goat curse leveled against them and dream big. Like the old proverb states: "Where there's a will there's a way!"
